NUBURU Blue Laser

ssentium High Speed Extrusion (HSE) 3D printing manufacturer and industrial laser specialist NUBURU have collaborated to develop a new blue laser-based metal 3D printer that could be a good solution to the traditional metal 3D printing process of copper/gold/aluminum/stainless steel metals that are prone to reflections and difficult to shape.

The upcoming printer, designed to achieve high resolution and high throughput of industrial-grade metal parts, will be developed under a "multi-year, multi-million-dollar" protocol. According to the partners, the system will be suitable for a variety of key industries, such as automotive, aerospace and defense.

Elisa Teipel, Chief Development Officer and co-founder of Essentium, said, "NUBURU is a leader in blue laser technology, and their expertise will help achieve speed and power gains on our new platform. We look forward to working with their team and leveraging their technology to enable Essentium to commercialize a new metal 3D printing platform."

Dr. Mark Zediker, co-founder, CEO and President of NUBURU, said, "We are excited to work closely with the Essentium team to combine the power of our existing technologies to develop and manufacture a new transformative platform for additive manufacturing. Our high power, high brightness blue laser technology, along with our 3D printing intellectual property will help Essentium build a powerful metal 3D printer with a wide range of uses."

What are blue lasers used for

What's so special about NUBURU's blue laser

Alloy metals such as copper, stainless steel and aluminum are known to reflect a large portion of the energy from infrared waves and other colors of light. Therefore, using conventional lasers may result in poorer print quality, as well as lower print speeds, because the energy is not absorbed as efficiently.

On the other hand, metals like copper absorb blue light much better than other wavelengths, so using blue lasers can melt these materials much faster. As a result, NUBURU claims that blue laser technology can make 3D printing up to 10 times faster than its competitors, while also allowing metal printing at very high densities.

According to Essentium, the new 3D printer will produce parts similar to traditional castings and forgings, and with significantly less post-processing.

Essentium's HSE™ 3D Printing Platform

Essentium's HSE™ 3D printing platform has transformed traditional manufacturing by providing its customers with industrial-scale additive manufacturing solutions that enable them to quickly and cost-effectively produce production-ready parts on a large scale for the production floor.

The Essentium High Speed Extrusion ("HSE") 3D printing platform for prosthetic and orthopedic device fabrication controls the stiffness and strength at every point around the final product. This allows you to make lighter products with greater stiffness in the areas that need support, which can produce optimal results, reduce costs and provide greater patient comfort through more precise fit designs and shorter fabrication cycles. Orthopedic labs and clinics can scan and provide finished products to patients in days (instead of weeks). Replacing traditional plaster casting prosthetic molding with 3D printing.
